Back in 2018, I wrote “Baltimore's microtonal, polyrhythmic party-machine, Horse Lords, have rapidly become one of the most interesting bands operating at the moment and an integral part of their sound is the saxophone playing of Andrew Bernstein (though his cowbell work is nothing to shake a stick at either!). I caught a solo set for alto and max patches in Paris when 75 and HL happened to be crossing thru Europe at the same time, and was floored by his radiant, circular pattern music for horn”. That material would eventually become Andrew’s astounding _An Exploded View of Time_ solo LP which he’d recorded in the months before this set at Outpost, and which would be released later that year by Hausa Mountain. He’s become a consummate instrumentalist here, the result of constantly expanding his concept through study and experimentation. Rapidly alternating fundamentals give rise to sprints through parallel harmonic series, and resonances are coaxed out of the room by this vibrating air column until one seems to mirror the other. But for all the cascading, shimmering intensity of his sound, there is a calm, almost still quality to these performances. I suspect it’s in part the product of the diffuse, zen-like focus on the breath that is required to pull this music off, a function of the body and the mind. - C.C. 2/1/2021
