Benefit Track -"Irons Out"

about

First in a new series of tracks donated by artists to benefit the Fire Over Heaven archive, 75 Dollar Bill’s “Irons Out” is a propulsive, 20-minute twin guitar and percussion workout. Rick Brown provides a locomotive, single-minded rhythm on plywood crate and foot percussion while long-time collaborator Steve Maing and I obsess our way through a handful of riffs and their permutations on quarter tone guitars. Recorded in 2014 and mixed by Rick--who also created the more screwed than chopped intro--”Irons Out” was originally intended for a split cassette release that never quite saw the light of day. A deep cut that we are glad is surfacing in this format, newly mastered by Steve Silverstein, with all proceeds going towards FOH’s growing archive of concert recordings here on Bandcamp.

The Fire Over Heaven series and community around Outpost Artist Resources has been a big part of my life over the past few years. After 15 years of booking underground shows at incredible but often short-lived DIY venues around town, being able to organize a stable, monthly night, especially in the supportive environment of the Outpost (home cooked dinners before every show!?), felt like a dream. The idea was to create a situation where artists from the city’s many undergrounds (as well as the occasional out of towner) could try out new material, and hear one another in a low key, non-commercial environment. And as I hope the recordings in this archive demonstrate, we were on to something pretty good before the pandemic shut live music down and sent many artists and venues into economic freefall. It’s an odd time to be asking musicians to donate their labor (even if it’s to benefit other musicians) so I thought it only fair that a band I am in be the ones to initiate this series of releases. My thanks goes to Rick and Steve for giving their blessings for using their work this way, and to Ruth, Mika and David at Outpost for all their efforts keeping this project afloat through hard times. While the end goal is to eventually return to hosting concerts in Ruth’s beautiful two story studio, in the meantime, we hope to provide some curious, provocative and restorative listening experiences here in the digital realm, to maintain the thread that connects us to live communal music making/listening even when it can’t happen, and to help support the artists in our communities in the modest ways we can. In the short five months since we started the online archive, we’ve been able to produce 22 sets as digital releases, and have been able to send more than $2000 to the artists involved. We’ve got another 60 or so sets in the vault which we hope to get online soon, plus hopes of working with artists on special releases of new material so we are just getting started! We’ll need your help to get there though, so if you have the means, please consider supporting Fire Over Heaven by purchasing these benefit tracks or some of the other great releases on this site!
