about

What is a Jantar, anyway? The internet tells me it is the name of a town in Poland, means “amber” in Czech, Serbo-Croatian and Slovene, or “dinner” Galician and Portuguese. For this concert, Jantar was Chad Laird on guitar, Kirsten Nordine on keyboards and Kelly Rudman on drums. Cellist Tianna Kennedy was supposed to be there too but had to cancel at the last minute. When I asked Chad for a band bio, all I could get out of him was “an experimental easy listening band from New York”, which I suppose is fair enough. Jantar’s music certainly goes down easy, even when they are working their way through odd meter rhythms or diffuse, percolating atmospheres. Saxophonist Ras Moshe, who also played this bill, said it reminded him of the Soft Machine. I can see what he means, though I think that would have been more true if Ras had sat in with them! To my ear there is something much more minimal happening here, with Kirsten’s repetitive keyboard melodies and Kelly’s drumming, alternately patient and joyously driving, anchoring these hazy (good) mood pieces. I know Chad mostly thru the cooperative venue/speakeasy he’s part of, the Sunview Luncheonette. Housed in a cozy decommissioned diner in Greenpoint, the Sunview has hosted some of my favorite shows in town since it opened a handful of years ago, intimate affairs with artists often cooking dinner behind the counter in the still functioning kitchen. The same thread of easy going generosity seems to run through Jantar’s music and they are in fine form here. - CC June 2021
