“California-based percussionist turned Persian santour-player, Sahba Sizdahkhani draws equally from the deep wells of both 1960s Free Jazz and Persian classical music. This performance at Fire Over Heaven was part of an epic cross country tour that eventually found Sizdahkhani settling on the west coast, and digging deep into studying the santour, the 104-stringed hammered dulcimer used in Persian classical music. Up until then, and including the duration of this tour, he had been approaching the instrument with more of a diy attitude, building long loops out of chained melodies and then switching to drumset and back again. The percussive, hammered texture of the santour’s sound seemed particularly well suited to his intermittent shifts to drumset, and listening back to this recording from a distance there is a pulsing, driving atmosphere to the whole set. After 4 years of studying santour in a more traditional framework, I’m curious what his forthcoming solo santour tape on Important records’ Cassauna imprint will sound like!” - C.C. April 2021
