about

Vocalist, percussionist, poet Anaïs Maviel belongs to the deep tradition of the song and the drum. Whether accompanying herself on the surdo, homemade instruments, keyboards or as she appears here plucking out polyrhythms on kamele n’goni (a kind of West African harp), hers is a language of melody and rhythm. Her voice can bend from sonorous clarity to gritty noise-like textures within the same breath, an approach to singing she has described as being informed by the sound of drums, and the tonalities suggested by “non-pitched” instruments. She sings in English, French and a language that practitioners of Shona mbira or Haitian vodou music (both traditions of great interest to Maviel) might similarly understand as being used to “call spirits”. When she plays n’goni like she does here, I’m reminded of one ancestor in particular, Don Cherry, whose way of singing and playing the instrument, and philosophy of unity and hybridity seem pointedly kindred. While Maviel has been expanding her concept into large scale ensemble rituals, solo performances like these offer us a view into her practice at its most intimate, distilled and conversational, as can be heard in the ecstatic call and response with the audience at the set’s end. Often adopting/embodying the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s mantra “Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future” Maviel’s music draws a line from the archetypal bard/poet/griot to a spirit of radical liberation that can only exist in the present. - C.C. 10/1/2020
