about

My memory’s a little foggy but the first time I can remember seeing Ryan Sawyer play was in late 2001 or 2002 at pirate radio station Free103.9’s little (and long gone) space in southside Williamsburg. I was new in town and soaking up the seemingly endless stream of incredible DIY shows that characterized the New York underground in those years. He was playing in Big Numbers that night, an incredible band that a few readers here may remember, and that I made a point of seeing every chance I got from that night on. I also quickly came to understand that seeing any band that involved Ryan was probably going to be interesting. He’s always had an intensity and sense of freedom on the drums that has found him in good company with improvisers like Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, Matana Roberts and in a fantastic long running trio with clarinetist Patrick Holmes and contrabassist Andrew Lafkas. He brings this same sensibility to more straight ahead rock contexts too, and in some ways his solo project, variously called “Lone Wolf” (with or without “Cub”) or just Ryan Sawyer over the years, is a literal superimposition of the “free” and “song” sides of his playing. The songs here, by Willie Nelson, Dylan, Neko Case to name a few, are boiled down to just the voice and a beat, but the beat here is less like the steady foot tapping that that statement might suggest and more like the roiling, multi-directional firestorms that drummers like Andrew Cyrille and Miflord Graves we’re inventing alongside the likes of Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor in the 60s. The result is idiosyncratic to be sure, intense and charming as hell. This set was part of a bill that featured three performers that I felt were somehow reinterpreting American folk forms (the other two being banjo player/singer/fiddler Anna Roberts-Gevalt and dobro player Zeke Healy). It was poor planning to have the show on the winter solstice so there weren’t many people there, but I’m glad this one’s got another life here. -C.C. 10/1/2020
