What even is a rock band these days? It’s a fair question, but Gold Dime play with such intensity and grit that they can make it seem like a totally unnecessary one. As D. Boon said, “Punk is whatever we made it to be”.

Back in 2018, I wrote that “despite being a big fan of Talk Normal, it took me a little while to catch drummer/vocalist Andrya Ambro's "new" band. When I finally did -- 75 Dollar Bill was invited to play with them at last year's Music Against Mass Incarceration benefit -- I was, unsurprisingly, blown away. Andrya's pummeling, floor tom heavy drumming and half-belted, half-chattered vocal style sounded more urgent than ever, and the self-assuredness and power with which she led the trio thru their angular, simmering and exploding arrangements left me with a little bit of band envy…” Some bands make you wanna practice. In between that show and this one John Bohannon (Ancient Ocean) replaced Jessica Ackerly on guitar, but I think otherwise the band remained the same, with Ian Douglas-Moore providing melodic, ebullient basslines, equally low backing vocals and occasional laptop noises, and saxophonist Snooze Karabush dropping in for a few numbers. Ian eventually became the regular sound person at Fire Over Heaven but we didn’t make him do sound for his own gig!
