Patrick Holmes is an NYC-based clarinetist who has quietly but steadily established that he is a reed player to watch. An omnivorous listener with a sensibility that draws on everything from Steve Lacy to Greek klaritzides to hardcore, Ruth Crawford Seeger and so on out. He’s maintained a steady clutch of improvising relationships over the years, notably a trio with drummer Ryan Sawyer and contrabassist Andrew Lafkas, and groups featuring multi-horn player Daniel Carter and the Italian drummer Federico Uighi. He’s also lent his inventive and incisive playing to an impressive variety of groups over the last two decades, including Electroputas, large ensembles led by Lafkas and Patrick Brennan, my own trio with him and Talice Lee, and increasingly, a steady stream of ad hoc groups in the Vision Festival universe. But this set is a rare (and perhaps at present, the only available?) recording of Patrick leading a group through a series of his own tunes. The forms often find this trio in open, improvised waters which periodically coalesce into powerful elegiac melodic material. His collaborators here, tuba player Brian Wolff and alto saxophonist Nick Lyons, are more than up for the challenge, improvising gorgeous heterophony and deep listening moments as the moment calls for it. - C.C. 9/29/2020
