I probably first heard Ras Moshe play at CBGBs, when they were doing free jazz gigs there on Sundays in the early 2000s. A decade or so later, Ryan Walsh (Neg-Fi) put Corcorax on a bill with Ras’ Music Now duo at a gallery in Crown Heights, but after that I lost track of him for a few years. When Ryan, a tireless booster of the DIY scene here (not to mention in the Balkans and South America), passed away in 2016, Ras was one of the many artists to play at the memorial concert that a group of us organized at the Park Church Coop in Greenpoint. Of the many beautiful tributes that night, Ras’ really stands out in my mind. He filled the church with a deep, open sound, rapidly modulating phrases that seemed to manipulate the church’s inner acoustics as much as the saxophone’s. It seemed fitting somehow that he didn’t use the circular breathing technique that many reed players use, that these shimmering ribbons of sound, each the length of his breath, made a pattern of resonances that was broken, interrupted, not quite a circle. In the context it was both an expression of grief and a celebration of our friend’s tragically short life, and I was struck that this music, our music, could serve this sad but absolutely necessary function. That this could be one of the spiritual uses of this music, or of any music that is forged within the interdependence of a community. A short time later I asked Ras to play at Fire Over Heaven and found that he brought the same spirit. It was a different room and a different occasion, but one similarly actualized by a community committed to the expression of love through sound. -C.C. 12/3/2020
Ras Moshe Burnett (Theodore Burnett III) is a Jazz musician, saxophonist, poet, activist, teacher and returning student working toward a music therapy degree. His paternal Grandfather Ted Burnett ("Barnett" professionally) played Tenor and Alto Saxophones after his arrival from Jamaica in the early 1930's. Ras' father Yaakov Levi (Ted Burnett II) played Alto Sax, Flute and Bass Clarinet in the Brooklyn/Harlem area throughout the 70's. Ras studied music in the public schools, (mentored in Jazz history by Don Payne in Junior High), and with his father and grandfather, eventually playing in reggae bands in the 80's and early 90's, then leading his own Jazz groups since 1987. Ras is a nine- year member of Bill Cole's Untempered Ensemble featuring Warren Smith, Joseph Daley, Gerald Veasley, Althea SullyCole and Lisette Santiago. Ras believes in the positive effect that Jazz and New Music can have on personal and socio-political life, and also utilizes Jazz for social movements in the Black community and human rights causes.
