I’ve been a big fan of trumpeter Jaimie Branch since hearing the first Fly or Die record, and was spoiled by many opportunities to see her play after she relocated from Chicago to New York, in the pre-pandemic era. She’s got an incredible sound on her instrument, is equally adept at writing striking melodies and taking things out as an improviser, and with charm to spare, I think it’s fair to say she’s one of the more colorful characters on the scene. In addition to leading her own groups, she’s also kept busy working in bands led by Matana Roberts, Rob Mazurek, and countless improvising situations (she even sat in on a 75 Dollar Bill tune one time, when she wandered into Co-Prosperity Sphere/International Anthem HQ in Chicago the night we happened to be playing). In fact, the last show I went to before the lockdown started was Fly or Die at Roulette. I had no idea that it’d be the last time I’d go to a concert indoors for who knows how long, but of course that’s not the only reason that show stands out in my memory. She played blistering runs, flying high over the dueling low strings and driving drums that characterize that band's sound, railed against the administration (“the clowns”), and gave voice to the deep uncertainty that we all had, and still have, about where we were all headed. Some of that situation is changing, thankfully, but that uncertainty remains a persistent, nagging presence in our lives.
When I asked Jaimie to play at Fire Over Heaven she suggested Anteloper, her duo with longtime sparring partner, Jason Nazary. Jason was new to me at the time, but I’ve since seen him around town, most recently playing drums and synths on the sidewalk in Ridgewood, celebrating another International Anthem release. Jaimie and Jason both augment their usual axes with synths in this project, so there’s a heavy dose of futurist, science fiction here. Jason’s percolating squelchs and squeaks are framed by heavy footed beats, while Jaimie’s horn is often swallowed or totally buried in Juno tones, only occasionally peeking thru clearings in the clouds.
